Illinois Prevention Dropout Summit Summary Report

Illinois Prevention Dropout Summit Summary Report

The November 4, 2009 Illinois Dropout Summit was convened by the State Department of Education, Advance Illinois and State Farm Insurance Companies with approximately 500 people from all over the state representing education, government, business, the media, and community based organizations in attendance. The day began with a morning plenary featuring State Farm Insurance Companies Chairman and CEO Ed Rust, Jo Anderson, Jr., Senior Advisor for the US Department of Education, and Illinois State Superintendent of Education Dr. Christopher Koch. America’s Promise chair, Alma Powell provided an informational and motivational presentation to call all participants to action. Our own Rick Stephens provided the audience with background information and an overview of the regional work sessions participants would be engaged in for the remainder of the day.

The work sessions were lead and facilitated by volunteers from State Farm, Boeing, the Illinois Business Round Table, the Quincy School Board, the Illinois PTA, and other groups using a process developed by Birth2Work. The 12 work sessions developed a set of common language, shared values, shared vision and a next-steps action plan for reducing the Illinois high school dropout rate. We are pleased to be a part of the leadership team, along with Illinois Voices for Children, the Illinois State PTA, and the Illinois Business Round Table, in the planning stages for continuing the work of the Summit.
