A special selection of posts for families with kids ages 0 to 3-years-old

On Social Media as a New Mom:

Not too long ago I was a first-time mom, who didn’t know about a lot of things. So, I did what we all do and turned to the internet.

I wanted to find parent mentors who were excited to be parents. After spending lots of time looking for proactive, growth-minded approaches to parenting, I had to stop looking in the parenting section at all.

On the Benefits of Reflection:

Being a parent is hard. Being a toddler is also really hard. There are big emotions to contend with. There are toys stolen and food spilled and playdates cut short.

Developing a sense of control and perspective in your life takes practice. So we’re starting early. Besides reflecting on what we can do better next time, there are enormous benefits of routinely recounting our experiences together.

On Dealing with Extended Family:

“Someone definitely has to talk to Grandma,” I said. “Whether it’s you or your husband is up to you. But that situation is not acceptable.”

I helped confirm, what she already suspected, that the problem was not just that her son was upset every time he returned from a visit but that his grandmother’s words were creating a deeply negative impression about what they feel is an important aspect of life.

On Dealing with “the Terrible Twos”:

Why do people refer to the second year of life as terrible? I know that some of my favorite times with my three sons were when they were two years old.

During their second year, toddlers are running and climbing and need to be watched very carefully. Parents should be clear and consistent in the expectations they have for their toddler’s behavior while they consistently reinforce good behavior with positive words and responses.
